CENTERVILLE - Multiple injuries were reported after a head-on collision in Centerville. The crash between a Chevy Silverado pickup and a Chevy Colbalt sedan happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. in front of 542 South Main Street near Hornbeam Lane.
One person had to be extricated by firefighters using the Jaws of Life. 5 people in all including three children were taken to Cape Cod Hospital, some reportedly with serious injuries. Barnstable Police say their investigation is ongoing but the children were not properly restrained.
A Mass Casulty Incident (MCI) was declared bringing in ambulances from Hyannis and Barnstable Fire Departments to transport the victims. Barnstable Police are investigating the cause of the crash, including if poor weather played a role. Photos by Frank F. Paparo/CWN
Seat belt saves a life
SOUTH DENNIS – Around 7 a.m. Thursday the young male driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer lost control of his vehicle southbound on Route 134 in South Dennis just past the Fresh Pond parking area.
The vehicle crossed the northbound lane, entered the woods, struck and snapped off a large pine tree and came to rest on its roof.
The rear end of the vehicle appears to have hit the pine tree so at some point in its travels the vehicle “did a 180.” Uninjured, the driver freed himself from the wreck.
The driver stated that he thought the cause of the crash was the fact that his two rear tires were bald and he had new tires on the front.
He recalls the car hydroplaning across the road and entering the woods. He says he held tightly to the wheel and prayed that he would survive. He credits his seat belt with saving his life.
Dennis police are investigating.

Custody issue sparks police response and school lockdown
CENTERVILLE - At about 9:15 a.m. Thursday Barnstable Police responded to a 911 call from the Centerville Elementary School on Bay Lane, which was put into a lockdown mode with no one allowed to enter or exit the building. When officers arrived they were told that there had been an argument outside the school between a parent and one of the school personnel concerning a custody issue. The parent apparently wanted to take their child out of school but left when police approached. The parent was stopped on Bay Lane near Main Street in Centerville. Darren Texeira, 44, of Marstons Mills was arrested and charged with violating a restraining order and disturbing a school assembly. The incident remains under investigation by Barnstable Police. Wind tips pole on Race Lane
MARSTONS MILLS - At about 7:30 a.m. Thursday Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire and Barnstable Police responded to a report of a toppled utility pole with wires arcing (see photo at right) on Race Lane located several hundred feet from the Route 149 roundabout in Marstons Mills.
Public safety personnel first thought that a car had struck the pole, but then determined that high winds had pushed it over until it was caught up in wires and trees.
Barnstable Police had to shut Race Lane from the roundabout to Columbia Avenue until NStar resolved the problem.
