Crane crew beats Mother Nature to steeple removal

SOUTH YARMOUTH – A crew from Baxter Crane & Rigging removed the spire from the Bass River Community Baptist Church early Wednesday ahead of the latest high wind event on Cape Cod.

Located at 84 Old Main Street in South Yarmouth just west of Yarmouth Fire Department headquarters, the church is reportedly no longer active. In fact, the Town of Yarmouth is listed as the owner.

Yarmouth firefighters had recently observed that the church’s spire was breaking away from its supporting structure.

The town’s building department took responsibility for removing the threat and called in Baxter Crane & Rigging, which deployed its 55-ton Grove/Krupp All-Terrain Crane with a 125-foot boom and man-basket.

After making holes in the side of the spire, workers threaded through a lifting strap.

They then cut the last tenuous connection holding the spire to the structure and lifted it away, lowering it gently to earth.
