Top story: Burning wire causes major phone/communication outage on outer Cape

WELLFLEET - (updated 11:45 p.m.) An electric wire tangled in trees apparently broke and came in contact with the main Verizon fiber-optic line to the outer Cape along Route 6 in Wellfleet near the Truro line late Monday afternoon causing the line to burn up. As a result all phone service in Provincetown, Truro and parts of Wellfleet was knocked out. Landlines and cell phones along with DSL and even 911 service were all affected. 911 calls were automatically rerouted. The fiber line also feeds the Truro cell site meaning cell calls could not be relayed back to the central station. Local police and fire were using backup radios as the 800 trunking system at the Truro site was also apparently being affected because the phone line feeding it to the main state control point went down. Verizon repair crews were working late into the evening to replaced the damaged section of cable. By 11 p.m. service was beginning to be restored. 911 was back to normal and most landlines and cells appeared to be working again. The power line issue itself was quickly resolved by NStar and power outages did not occur as a result. Luckily police reported no major incidents during the outage. This incident is a graphic reminder of how fragile the communications infrastructure remains on the outer Cape and the need for redundancy to be built in.
Meanwhile, as many as 1800 NStar customers in Truro and Wellfleet lost power earlier Monday after highb winds blew down tree limbs and wires. Some were out for several hours.
