8:00 a.m. update:
This video was shot within the hour. An almost surreal scene at Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro. Skies were almost completely clear with only a light breeze. Large waves of 15-20 feet are crashing ashore causing beach erosion. It looks like the Cape got off cheap looking at the hurricane force winds on the north shore and in New Hampshire where over 250,000 people have lost power.
2:00 a.m. update: Scattered power outages from downed trees comtinue to be a problem. The largest problem as of this report seems to be in Sandwich. Earlier a large section of Harwich was in the dark and scattered other outages have been reported across the Cape. NStar continues to work on the outages.
Cruiser strikes pole during response
WEST YARMOUTH - On Thursday, February 25, 2010, at 6:44 p.m. the Yarmouth Police Department received a call from a citizen reporting a disturbance on West Yarmouth Road in West Yarmouth. Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers Albert Sprague, Scott Lundegren, and Melissa Alden responded to the disturbance in separate cruisers from different patrol sectors.
At approximately 6:46 p.m. while travelling northbound on West Yarmouth Road during heavy rain and wind, Patrol Officer Alden’s 2008 Ford Crown Victoria fully marked police cruiser struck a large puddle of water while rounding a curve and slid off the roadway and struck a utility pole. Patrol Officer Alden was able to call for assistance and fellow officers quickly came to her aid.
Patrol Officer Alden was treated at the scene for injuries that were not life threatening and transported to Cape Cod Hospital by members of the Yarmouth Fire Department.
Yarmouth Patrol Sergeant John Lanata -- with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police and the Barnstable County Sheriffs Department -- conducted an investigation that revealed that the heavy rains, wind, and treacherous road conditions contributed to the crash and no further action is warranted.
Patrol Officer Alden was wearing her safety belt system and body armor and was able to survive the crash with the assistance of the integrated cruiser crash protection and air-bag restraint systems. She was released from Cape Cod Hospital late last night and is recovering at her home and is expected to return to her patrol duties as scheduled.
