Top story: Head-on crash on "Suicide Alley" stretch of Route 6 in Harwich

HARWICH
- A three-vehicle crash closed the "Suicide Alley" stretch of Route 6 between exits 10 and 11 (Google map) in Harwich just before 4 p.m. A Ford Taurus and Toyota Highlander collided head-on. A Ford Escape could not avoid the collision and also crashed.

Five ambulances were requested to the scene. Firefighters had to extricate some victims using the Jaws of Life. Three people were rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, reportedly including a teenager by Harwich and Brewster ambulances. A Chatham ambulance also responded to the scene.

State Police are investigating if a medical conditon led the Highlander driver to cross over causing the crash. As of 4:45 p.m. the road had reopened but residual delays were likely for a time.

The term "Suicide Alley" refers to the two lane stretch of Route 6 between Orleans and Dennis that -- prior to improvements -- was the scene of frequent head-on crashes including several fatals.
