Burst sprinkler drenches Falmouth senior apartments FALMOUTH - The frigid weather likely contributed to a burst sprinkler pipe that caused extensive water damage to the Harborview Apartments on Scranton Avenue earlt Saturday afternoon. The complex housing senior citizens had to be evacauted, Many were temporarily put up at the nearby Holiday Inn.
Updated: Retired firefighter killed in West Tisbury house fire WEST TISBURY - Firefighters on Marthas's Vineyard were battling fire and ice trying to control a house fire in West Tisbury. The call came in just after 5 a.m. on Christiantown Road and crews found the house fully involved. Frigid 10 degree temperatures quickly turned hose streams to ice. According to the Martha's Vineyard Times, after the flames were out firefighters made a grim discovery. The body of 63-year-old Daniel E. Prowten was discovered in the burnt out home. Prowten was a 30-year veteran of the West Tisbury Fire Department including at least 15-years as Lieutenant. The State Fire Marshal has joined the investigation to determine the cause of the fire but it is not considered suspicious. The Times reports a neighbor awoke to her dog barking and smelled smoke and then heard a loud bang and looked out and saw the house on fire.
Speaking of the cold (brrrrrrrrrr!) PROVINCETOWN - Its arguably the coldest morning of the year. Overnight temperatures dropped to an average 10 degrees across the Cape but at least the winds have abated some. This fishing vessel just recently made port at Macmillan Wharf in Provincetown showing the scars of being at sea in these conditions, looking like it had been in an episode of "Deadliest Catch". YARMOUTH - Yarmouth Police make quick work of a reported robbery. Police were called to a Bliscott Avenue residence around midnight after reports of a robbery where a knife was shown. A short time later a suspect vehicle was stopped and three people taken into custody. Marc Cheek, 36, of Hyannis allegedly pulled the knife. He and 22-year-old Reanna Coblyn were charged with armed robbery. Coblyn was additionally charged with carrying a dangerous weapon and giving a false name to police. The driver of the vehicle, Latonia Cannady, 42, of Hyannis ws charged with being an accessory. Driver escapes serious injury after Mercedes flips BARNSTABLE - A driver escaped with minor injuries after his Mercedes Benz rolled over in Barnstable. Rescuers were called to Shoot Flying Hill at the sharp curve just off Route 132 just after midnight. The driver was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. Barnstable Police are investigating.
