Harwich gas station robbed at gunpoint


HARWICH
 - At approximately 6:30 p.m., Wednesday evening, the members of the Harwich Police Department were dispatched to the Speedway Gas Station on Main Street in Harwich Center for a reported armed robbery that had just occurred.

The on-duty attendant at the Speedway told officers that a black male, wearing a ski mask, and brandishing a black handgun entered the office and demanded money. The attendant handed over an envelope containing cash that was going to be deposited. The subject then exited the station and ran south on Bank Street.

A K-9 unit from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office responded and conducted a track for the suspect. Other Harwich Police units continued to search the area for the suspect but one was not located at the time.
The Harwich Police Patrol Division was also assisted by the Harwich Police Detective Division and a Criminal Identification Officer from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office. The incident remains under investigation at this time.

The Harwich Police are asking if anyone was in the area of the Speedway at the time of the robbery and noticed anything suspicious to please contact them. Please call 508-430-7541 and ask for Detective Marc Harrris.

Driver accused of being drunk after car vs tree in Orleans
ORLEANS - Orleans Police charged the driver of a car that struck a tree with suspicion of operating under the influence of alcohol. The crash happened in front of 27 Locust Road about 8:40 p.m. A passenger was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries. Court records identify the driver as Devin N. Miller, 21, of Harwich. He was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol (2nd offense) and operating negligently to endanger

Pickup vs Cumberland Farms in South Yarmouth

SOUTH YARMOUTH - A medical condition may have caused a woman to lose control of her Ford F-150 pickup and crash into the Cumberland Farms store on Route 28 in South Yarmouth around 3 p.m. The woman was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital. A building inspector was called to check the damage. The front wall of the store appeared to have been pushed in and a window cracked. An ATM machine and couple of boxes of merchandise were knocked over. The store was remaining open at last check. The crash is under investigation by Yarmouth Police.

Wrong-way hybrid hits SUV head-on


CENTERVILLE
- Around 8:45 a.m. a Toyota Prius hybrid sedan reportedly traveling north in the southbound lane on Old Stage Road crashed head-on into a Honda Pilot SUV traveling south.

The crash occurred in front of Unique Real Estate at 404 Main Street, Centerville. The airbags deployed in the hybrid and one person with unknown injuries was taken to Cape Cod Hospital by Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills (COMM) rescue.

The area was tied up for about 45 minutes until the scene was cleared. Barnstable Police are investigating.

Dennis Police seek information about purse snatching
DENNISPORT – The Dennis Police Department reports that at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening January 26, 2010, Dennis Police responded to the Rite Aid Pharmacy (photo at right) located at 711 Route 28 in Dennisport for a reported unarmed robbery (purse snatching) of a female in the front parking lot of the business.
 
The victim, a 57-year-old Brewster resident, told police that after she exited the store and was in the process of entering her vehicle, which was parked in the front lot, she was assaulted from behind by a subject who pulled her shoulder bag from her grasp causing the strap to break.  The subject then ran south through the pharmacy drive-up area and was last seen entering a nearby park on Hall Street.
 
This individual is described as a dark-skinned black male, late teens to early twenties, about 6 feet in height and 150 pounds with a thin build. The suspect was wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt.
 
A second subject, described as a white male, late teens to early twenties, about 5 feet 8 inches in height and 150 pounds wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, was seen just prior to the robbery interacting and conversing with the suspect in front of the store.  This individual was last seen running southbound along Division Street.
 
The purse, a brown shoulder bag with a snap front and zippered compartment, was not recovered.
 
The victim received a minor injury to her hand but was not transported from the scene. 
 
Dennis Police were assisted by the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Yarmouth Police K-9 unit.

Cape Cod aircrew locates 4 survivors of sunken tug near Jamaica
KINGSTON, JAMAICA
— While assisting with Haiti relief operations, a Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., aircrew located a life raft with four survivors from a tug that sank approximately 53 miles north of Jamaica, Monday, Jan. 25, 2010.

Search and rescue coordinators at the Seventh Coast Guard District command center in Miami dispatched a Cape Cod-based HU-25 Falcon jet crew to search for the U.S.-flagged tug, Betty, after receiving an emergency position indicating radio beacon alert from the boat at 3:39 a.m.

The Falcon crew arrived on scene at 6:50 a.m., and located the life raft with survivors near the vessel's last known position. A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Fla., MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the four crewmembers aboard the helicopter.

The men were taken to U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Their condition is unknown.

The two aircrews and an HC-144A Ocean Sentry aircrew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala., also conducted a searched for a fifth crewmember of the tug, but did not locate him. The Coast Guard ended its search for the last crewman Tuesday, Jan. 26.
