Black ice causes several crashes
CAPE COD - Black Ice was apparently responsible for several crashes Wednesday evening. Around 9:30 p.m. a vehicle rolled over on Route 6 eastbound before exit 7 on the Yarmouth/Barnstable line where a freak snowsquall had whitened the road. Then two Jeeps collided just beyond the rollover. None of the drivers were injured. Meanwhile about the same time in Falmouth rescuers had to extricate a person from a crash at Maravista Avenue and Teaticket Highway. The victim was taken to Falmouth Hospital.

Gas leak forces temporary evacuations
FALMOUTH - A gas leak about 3:45 p.m., forced the evacuation of a Falmouth neighborhood. Kappy's Liquors and a number of residents were cleared out as a precaution after the break along Spring Bars Road. Fire and Police officials stood by while National Grid crews were called to cap the leak.

Truro Police Chief Thomas announces retirement
TRURO - Chief John Thomas of the Truro Police Department announced that he will be retiring, possibly as soon as February 28th. At last night’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting Chief Thomas read a prepared statement after giving his second quarterly report for the current fiscal year. In his statement Chief Thomas said “I have had the distinct honor of being the Chief of Police since 1993. I want to thank the Board of Selectmen, both past and present for the support that I have received over the years. This support is evident by my recent reappointment as chief through June 30th of 2012. Although there have been bumps in the road it has been an enjoyable ride. I have worked for the police department for over 35 years; my entire adult life. Like any sports player, one has to know when it’s time to walk away. For me I believe that time has come.”

CO detector saves the lives of Truro couple
TRURO - A carbon monoxide (CO) detector may well have saved the lives of a Truro couple. They awoke to the detector sounding about 4:30 a.m., called 911 and were advised to evacuate the home. Firefighters found elevated levels of the colorless, odorless gas in the residence on Kyle Way. Both victims were taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation and are expected to fully recover. Fire investigators believe a faulty furnace caused the problem.
