SANDWICH - One person was burned trying to escape a raging house fire in Sandwich early Thursday morning.
Reports of an odor of natural gas preceded a reported explosion and fire at 8 Chaucer Street off Cotuit Road about 4:10 a.m and firefighters arrived to find the home fully engulfed.
The occupant, Joseph Kuzava had escaped but suffered burns and was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital and later transferred to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston and is expected to survive.
A Mashpee engine assisted at the scene while other towns covered the Sandwich stations.
The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire but it did not appear to be suspicious, possibly due to a malfunctioning water heater.
Neighbors described Kuzava to reporters at the scene as a kind man who helped them when they needed things repaired. However he had been the subject of recent controversy as Sandwich officials had been investigating allegations of illegal businesses being run out of the home including a tree cutting service. Zoning fines were expected to be levied.
