Sewer system troubles prompt emergency declaration in Provincetown

This has been a familiar sight in Provincetown for the last couple of days as pumping trucks try to prevent flooding after a sewer system malfunction.
PROVINCETOWN - It was the last thing town officials needed to hear on the busiest weekend of the year. The Town of Provincetown's sewer system has been operating under emergency conditions since 9:30 a.m. on July 4th when a low vacuum alarm went off. On-call personnel were immediately notified. Several leaks were reported across town but the exact problem could not be found.

Provincetown DPW workers along with system engineers AECOM (formerly Metcalf and Eddy contracted the services of an army of cesspool pumping trucks to mitigate the situation and prevent major flooding. It has been a common site to see trucks in busy roadways doing emergency pumping where sewerage has started to bubble up. Despite the efforts CWN has learned a number of structures have been contaminated and will have to be cleaned. On Monday crews located a sewer pipe with a significant hole in it on Dyer Street (right foreground) thought to be the main culprit. That street has been closed because of the excavation and repairs. Officials say it will take some time to make those repairs and then get the system back up to full service.

DPW telephone lines are being staffed. People with concerns can call (508) 487-7060 to report problems and obtain information. If there is no answer at that number call the 24 hour emergency line at (508) 487-5474.

An overflow crowd showed up at an emergency meeting of the board of selectmen at the Grace Gouveia Building on Alden Street Monday evening.

Health officials have closed all bayside beaches as a precaution because of the possibility of raw sewerage getting in the water.

Residents and businesses hooked to the sewer system are being asked to conserve water whereever possible. Minimize showers and delay washing clothes until the emergency is over.

You may recall a few weeks ago a pump failure in the Hyannis sewer system caused sewerage to flood several homes in the South Street area and closed beaches.

At right a full moon rises over a closed Johnson Street beach.

One injured in Hyannis crash
HYANNIS - At 11:30 a.m. Monday Barnstable Police were dispatched to the area of the Pufferbellies sign on Route 28 for a crash. CWN's Frank Paparo who was right around the corner arrived first and helped police locate the vehicle involved about 100 feet away from the original location. A passenger from a Ford Taurus was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. The driver of the Taurus told CWN a small white compact car allegedly rear-ended him.
