WELLFLEET - Terrifying moments for a young man and woman in Wellfleet late Monday evening after they become trapped in a stalled vehicle awash on the Lieutenant Island Bridge. Listen to the 911 call here.
The call came in just before 11 p.m. The pair were apparently just leaving the island for the mainland when the Jeep Grand Cherokee stalled out in the deep water.
They reportedly told the 911 operator the water was up to the dashboard of the car. The two were advised to exit the vehicle and await rescue on top of the car.
A rescue boat from the Eastham Fire Department braved the rough weather and was able to reach the pair who were brought back safely to shore about 45 minutes after the ordeal began much to the relief of waiting relatives.
They were evaluated for hypothermia by Wellfleet EMT's.
The bridge to the exclusive island from the mainland routinely floods at high tide but with the added storm surge the tide was even higher than normal.
The vehicle was towed once the water receded
