Sewer malfunction creates smelly mess in Hyannis
HYANNIS - A malfunctioning sewer made for a smelly mess in Hyannis Thursday evening. Several condo units and a couple of houses in the Pleasant Street and South Street area were flooded by backed up sewerage and left uninhabitable until cleanup crews can decontaminate the area. A malfunctioning pump at a facility on Old Colony Way apparently allowed the sewerage to back up. Some 10,000 gallons of sewerage aparently also made its way into Hyannis Harbor forcing the closure of Kalmus and Veteran's beaches.

Barn destroyed in West Barnstable blaze

WEST BARNSTABLE - At about 2:50 p.m. Thursday there was a call for a structure fire at a home at 55 Lisa Lane in West Barnstable. When West Barnstable Fire Chief Joe Maruca arrived on scene, he found heavy black smoke coming up over the house at the end of Lisa Lane and the end of the street blocked by some civilian vehicles. He was able to get the cars moved and drove down the long driveway to the house. At this point it was apparent that the barn at the rear of 55 Lisa Lane was fully involved in fire and not the house. There was no apparent access to the fire and foot access was down a steep embankment. He was directed to a part-paved and part-dirt driveway that circled around the house and provided access to the rear. Once again the route was blocked, this time by a parked camper truck and sedan. Two companies had to hold out on Lisa Lane until the camper truck could be moved.  Once the camper was moved, an engine company was able to lay a supply line from the street part way to the fire.  Firefighters then stretched about 800 feet of hose from the engine to the fire, extinguishing it with foam.

Mutual aid from the Barnstable, Sandwich, and Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills (COMM) fire departments
along with an engine from the Department of Conservation and Recreation backed up the West Barnstable units. According to Chief Maruca, the cause of the fire is not known at this time but will be investigated by Barnstable Police fire Investigator John York .

Crown Vic nicked by Navigator

HYANNIS
- At about 12:15 p.m. Thursday on Barnstable Road a Lincoln Navigator nearly ripped the driver’s door off an unmarked Barnstable police car on a traffic stop. The Barnstable Police Ford Crown Victoria was stopped in front of Staples Plaza in the lane headed to the airport rotary with its emergency lights on as Deputy Chief Craig Tamash was on a traffic stop.

The female driver of the Navigator apparently thought she had enough clearance as she tried to squeeze between the island and the open door of the Crown Vic. There were no injuries but eyewitnesses speculated that had the SUV been a few inches closer, Deputy Tamash could have been seriously injured. Outbound traffic was tied up until the scene cleared.
