Drivers gone wild keep police busy

DENNISPORT
– Around 10:40 p.m. Friday a Dennis Police officer was attempting to pull over an erratic driver in a gray sedan traveling west on Route 28. The driver, traveling alone, apparently lost control of his vehicle as it neared Benny’s.

The car swerved off the road to the right, crashed over a snow bank, careened through the parking lot of the Carpet One Home Showcase building and came to rest in the parking lot of the Jonathan Edwards Motel at 393 Main Street (Route 28) with its front and rear left tires blown out.

Following a foot pursuit, by Patrolman Kristian Oberg and Officer Marc Symington, the operator was placed under arrest and transported to the Dennis Police Station. Dennis Police was assisted at the scene by the Harwich Police Department.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Ronnel King, 31, of Dennisport. King was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration, Operating with a Suspended License, Failing to Stop for Police, Speeding, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Marked Lanes, and Resisting Arrest. He was later bailed on the charges and will be arraigned Monday in Orleans District Court.

While Dennis officers were conducting their investigation at the Jonathan Edwards parking lot, the call came in for a truck ramming Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel at 187 Upper County Road. A person driving by the chapel initially thought a motor vehicle crash had occurred but then saw the truck repeatedly back up and then ram the front steps of the building.

When Harwich police responded, the driver of the Ford F-350 diesel pickup with dual rear wheels attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended. The operator of the vehicle was transported to the Dennis Police Department and identified as Ethan Bedard, 25, of Hubbardston, MA. Bedard was charged with Failing to Stop for Police, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, Operating the influence of liquor (2nd offense) and Marked Lanes Violation. He was later released on bail and will be arraigned Monday in Orleans District Court.

The front entryway of the chapel sustained substantial damage as the truck knocked out two of the four posts supporting the entryway portico. A section of railing was destroyed and the left set of doors was pushed in. Damage was observed on a portion of the building to the left of the entryway. The truck also knocked down the chapel’s sign.

The front end of the truck sustained damage including a broken headlight. In the course of the rampage, a post apparently pierced the windshield on the passenger side.
Dennis Police are investigating both incidents.
