Arrest made in copper thefts in Barnstable

BARNSTABLE - On Thursday at approximately 9:53 p.m., members of the Barnstable Police Department Patrol Division assisted by the Detective Division arrested Peter Strazzullo, 35, of Sandwich for the theft of copper down spouts from a residence on Bay Street in Osterville. Since January 4th, 2013, sixteen houses in Barnstable have had their copper down spouts stolen. Eleven of those houses were in Osterville. As a result of the rash of copper thefts, the police department directed additional police units to Osterville. This directed patrol was successful and resulted in the arrest of Straxxullo. On February 21st, Barnstable Patrolman Steve Everett was assigned to patrol Osterville. He was checking houses on Bay Street and located a residence with missing down spouts. Everett had checked the house approximately 45 minutes earlier and the down spouts were in place. Everett next checked a 2nd Bay Street residence and located a vehicle parked in the driveway. The vehicle was registered to Strazzullo. Located in plain view on the front seat was a pry bar.Everett advised BPD Dispatch and numerous Barnstable Patrol Units responded. Under the direction of Barnstable Police Sgt Kevin Tynan, surveillance was initiated on the vehicle. At approximately 9:45 p.m., a second vehicle was observed on Bay Street. This vehicle was observed stopping in the area of Strazzullo's vehicle. The second vehicle then left the area quickly. A motor vehicle stop was conduct on the 2nd vehicle. A passenger in this vehicle was identified as Strazzullo. The operator said he was a friend of Strazzullo. Strazzullo called him and said he had broken down in Osterville. He asked him for a ride. Strazzullo was arrested and charged with the theft of copper from Bay Street. The vehicle operator was released.
Strazzullo was transported to the Barnstable Police Department and booked. He acknowledged to police investigators that he had been stealing copper down spouts in and around Osterville for the last two months. Strazzullo said he was in the process of stealing a copper down spout when he saw Everett’s police cruiser and fled on foot. Strazzullo;s vehicle was towed back to the Barnstable Police Department. The truck of the vehicle contained a large amount of stolen copper down spouts folded/bent into small sections. Strazzullo told police he had been selling to copper to a Middleboro metal recycler.

Man facing B&E, drug charges in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH - On Thursday at approximately 8:00 p.m. members of the Yarmouth Police Department were monitoring the West Yarmouth Cumberland Farms parking lot for possible illegal drug activity. Sergeant Kalil Boghdan and Detective Chris Vanness observed a white male, later identified as John Iliffe conduct what appeared to be a drug transaction with an unknown male. Sgt. Boghdan and Det. Vanness approached Iliffe and attempted to encounter him when an unknown female yelled “run, cops.” Iliffe ran from Sgt. Boghdan and Detective Vanness north on Ernest Road. During the foot pursuit, Iliffe ran up to the front door of #5 Ernest Road and entered the residence. Sgt. Boghdan and Detective Vanness followed Iliffe to the residence and made contact with the occupants inside. The occupants stated that they did not know who Iliffe was and that he entered without permission. Iliffe was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Yarmouth Police Department for processing. Iliffe was charged with Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime, Possession of Class B substance (suboxone), Possession of Class A with intent to distribute (heroin) During the booking process $634.00 in cash, 2.2 grams of heroin and suboxone was recovered and seized as evidence.

Yarmouth Police investigate bomb threat
YARMOUTHPORT - On Friday at approximately 9:15 a.m,s the Yarmouth Police Department received a 911 call reporting a bomb threat at a Law Office on Willow Street in Yarmouthport. As a precaution a portion of Willow Street was shut down for a period of time as the initial investigation was underway. Additional safety steps were taken and the building was evacuated for a short period of time while a sweep was conducted for suspicious packages. After the building was cleared and it was determined that there was nothing out of the ordinary the employees were allowed back in the building. An investigation was conducted by the Yarmouth Police Department and it was determined that the call was a hoax and most likely originated from Jamaica. The incident is under investigation at this time.

Driver escapes injury in Yarmouth rollover
YARMOUTH - Approximately 1:20 p.m., Yarmouth Fire Department responded to a report of a Motor Vehicle Crash on Route 6 Westbound past the West Yarmouth Road overpass. Units on location confirmed a single-vehicle motor vehicle crash with one occupant with minor injuries. Vehicle sustained major damage with broken windows and air bag deployment.
Witness stated the Mercury Mountaineer hit the right side guard rail and flipped completely over before hitting the trees and landing back on the wheels.
Lt. Kevin Huck on Ambulance 56 from Station 3 was fist on scene and said how lucky the driver was considering the 360* roll and landing on the wheels. The full size SUV took the impact very well. Engine 43 from HQ also responded, cutting trees and branches so the vehicle could be removed. Driver was evaluated and released on scene.

Reports from the scene indicate that two people were transported to Cape Cod Hospital. Traffic on the highway was disrupted until the scene could be cleared. State Police are investigating.

Rollover crash in Bourne
BOURNE - One person was injured in a rollover crash in Bourne shortly after 11:30 p.m. Thursday night. The crash happened on MacArthur Boulevard (Route 28) by the Otis rotary. The injuries were described as non life-threatening. State Police are investigating.

Charges filed in Bourne fatal crash
BOURNE - Charges have been filed against a driver in last Friday's fatal head-on crash on Sandwich Road in Bourne, Zachary Jamous, 20, of Harwich will be summoned to court to answer the charges of motor vehicle homicide, operating to endanger and marked lanes violation. Police say his Toyota Tacoma pickup collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla. A passenger in the Corolla, 81-year-old Hope Brooks of Forestdale, was killed. Jamous and the driver of the Corolla, 82-year-old Barbara Nix of Middleborough, were both seriously injured,
AMVETS post to host chili fest
SOUTH YARMOUTH - The Baker-Xiarhos AMVETS Post 333 announces its 9th Annual Chili Fest on February 24th, 2013, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the New Irish Village at 882 Main Street in South Yarmouth.
The Fest will feature chili from some of the Cape’s favorite restaurants, live music from local Cape Cod entertainers, and raffles, prizes and a “People’s Choice” award. A donation of $10 at the door is requested. Children are admitted for free.
The proceeds of the Chili Fest will help the Post in its mission of “veterans helping veterans and families in our Cape Cod community.”
