Wellfleet Police warn of pets being poisoned
WELLFLEET - Over the last couple of months, Lorial Russell, Wellfleet Animal Control Officer, has had approximately five dog owners throughout town contact her to report their dogs have been seen by a veterinarian due to sicknesses. All had blood work done and it was determined that they had ingested some kind of poison or toxin. No one can determine what these dogs came in contact with or know exactly what poisoned them as each of their owners admitted the dogs where roaming loose before being sick. ACO Russell wants all pet owners to be aware of this situation and keep an extra eye on their pets to care for their safety and well being.
Pet owners should be extra vigilant to obey the town’s leash law. Know what your dog is getting into and where he or she is at all times. This will help ensure your dog doesn’t get into anything you are not aware of.
To all home owners please make sure any and all toxic materials are properly covered and/or contained. Poisoning is a slow and painful death. No animal, domesticated or wild, should to have to endure or suffer through in inadvertent poisoning.
If your pet appears to be acting sick or different than their normal self, please immediately contact your pet’s veterinarian; this could be the matter of life or death. Earlier detection could result in less pain for your animal and a much better chance of your pet being treated and recovering.
If anyone sees or hears anything suspicious, please contact the Animal Control Officer or the Wellfleet Police Department at (508) 349-3702.
