January 16, 2013 (SANDWICH) _ Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich has plans to repurpose a 120-foot tall European beech tree on its grounds.
The tree that officials believe was more than 250 years old has died, but will live on through a sculpture and other uses.
Officials plan to remove the beech tree before starting an operation to recycle its wood. An artist will carve a 20-foot section of trunk into a garden sculpture.
The two-day operation begins Thursday.
Some wood will go to a nature center and be turned into a wooden train.
Among other uses, wood chips will also be spread on Heritage's walking trails, and branches will be sold for firewood.
