Upper Cape residents rattled by base detonations



January 15, 2013 (BOURNE) _ Upper Cape residents should expect to hear occasional explosions over the next two weeks coming from the Massachusetts Military Reservation.

Officials at Camp Edwards conducting cleanup activities recently discovered unexploded munitions that are unsafe to move and need to be destroyed in place.

Detonations of the 211 unexploded ordnance items began Monday – and rattled many around Bourne and Sandwich.

Military officials say the detonations are all within appropriate safety buffers and there is no risk residents.

The explosions will all happen about 2.5 miles from the base boundary with Bourne and 1.5 miles from the Sandwich town line.
