Parking lot fracas leads to four arrests
HYANNIS
- On Friday, members of the Barnstable Police Street Crime Unit (SCU) were working a 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift in Hyannis. SCU members patrol the Main Street, Hyannis area at bar closing time. A primary focus of the SCU is to deter acts of violence, disorderly conduct and vandalism on Main Street.

Banrstable Police say at approximately 1:09 a.m., SCU Supervisor Lt. John Murphy witnessed a large fight involving a group of females in the North Street parking lot near Barnstable Road. BPD Patrol Units and SCU members responded. Police arrested a female identified as Ashlee Northup, 28, of Hyannis (far left).  Northup was extremely intoxicated and combative with the arresting officers. She physically resisted attempts to be handcuffed.

During the struggle with police Northup’s sneakers fell off. Friends of Northrup identified as Katelyne M Benjamin, 21, of South Dennis (left center), Marylin Benjamin, 23, of Hyannis (right center) and others attempted to come to her aid  while she resisted attempts to handcuff her. Both sisters and others were struggling with police in an effort to stop them from handcuffing Northrup.

All present refused numerous requests by police to stop interfering, disperse and leave the area. This resulted in the arrest of Marylin Benjamin.  She also resisted attempts to be handcuffed but was eventually secured with handcuffs.  A female identified as Heather L Manwaring, 22, of Hyannis (far right) attempted to stop police from placing her in a cruiser.  She said that was her girlfriend and the police were not taking her anywhere. She threw a bag of potato chips at BPD Patrol Officer Steve Estey. Manwaring was subsequently also arrested.

All working BPD Patrol Units and SCU members were in the North Street Parking Lot attempting to disperse Northrup’s friends and a large crowd of onlookers. Katelyne Benjamin had ignored numerous requests to leave. She next threw one of Northrup’s sneakers at an SCU member striking him in the head and causing a laceration on his ear. Katelyne Benjamin attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended on Main Street near the Village Green. She fought with police and resisted attempts to secure her with handcuffs. She was eventually sprayed with OC. The officer's injury was minor and did not require medical attention.

All four were transported to Barnstable Police Department and charged with the following:

Marylin Benjamin
Disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, interfering with police, and affray (fighting)
