State to use new brine mixture on Cape Cod roads this winter

November 15, 2012 (SAGAMORE) _ State highway officials unveiled a new salt brine production system yesterday at their Sagamore depot.

The new combination of the brine with magnesium chloride can be put on highways up to two days ahead of a storm without wearing off.

It also contains less salt – which is helpful in protecting the Cape’s environment.

The new brine mixture will be made in Sagamore and used on Cape Cod and much of southeastern Massachusetts.

It won’t completely replace the use of salt altogether.

MassDot Director of Snow and Ice operations Paul Brown says the brine has been used for several years in the midwest with success.
