Harwich Fire sends supplies to Sandy victims

HARIWCH - Supplies headed to New York are loaded at Fire Department Headquarters for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Above: Fire Captain David LeBlanc catches a box from Brewster Firefighter Glen Cefalo while Captain John Clarke loads the trailer. The firefighting group will be leaving from HFD at 6 a.m. Sunday with two truckloads of goods heading to Breezy Point, Queens, N.Y., and the Rockaways area where more than 300 firefighters families live. During the September 11 terrorist attacks the neighborhood lost 59 firefighters. Traveling to New York will be Capt. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Craig Thornton, Lieutenant Mike Mason, Firefighter Scott Tyldesley, Dennis Firefighter Dan O'Connell and Madison LeBlanc, 16-year-old daughter of David. When she was in junior high school she did a 911 project and interviewed New York firefighter Ray Fiffer, a friend of her father. He will be meeting the group when they arrive in New York. Ray lost eleven fellow firefighters at his firehouse on the Upper East Side Engine 40 Ladder 35 on the day of the attacks. Many people have brought lots of clothes and supplies to the Harwich Fire Department and as Fire Chief Norman Clarke said " if Sandy had veered 150 miles to the northeast, we'd be the ones looking for help."
