HYANNIS - On Friday at approximately 1:14 p.m. multiple units from the Barnstable Police Department were dispatched to a “shots fired” call on Spring Street in Hyannis. Barnstable Police Patrol and Detective Units responded. An on scene investigation revealed an occupant of an SUV traveling north on Spring Street fired multiple rounds at number 40 Spring Street, Hyannis. At the time of the shooting 40 Spring Street was an occupied dwelling. During this time of day Spring Street is very busy with both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
A follow up investigation was conducted. Witnesses were interviewed and ballistic evidence including a spent shell casing was recovered. Based on witnesses interviews and police follow up the aforementioned SUV was identified as a 2012 GMC Acadia with New Jersey registration P56CKC. The vehicle in question was a Hertz rental. Additional follow up revealed a 22 year old female resident of Centerville rented the vehicle approximately one week ago.
A police BOLO (Be On the Look Out) was put out regarding the vehicle and its occupants being involved in the Spring Street “drive by” shooting. At approximately 10:36 p.m., Members of the Barnstable Police Street Crime Unit (SCU) located the vehicle traveling on Route 28 in Hyannis. The vehicle was stopped on Walton Avenue in Hyannis. The operator was identified as the 22-year-old female Centerville resident. The right front passenger was her boy friend. The boyfriend is very well known to Cape Cod Law Enforcement. The rear passenger was identified as Eric Brando, 20, of Osterville. Brando was found in possession of approximately ten grams of heroin on his person. He was placed under arrest and charged with possession class A heroin with intent to distribute. The female was interviewed by BPD regarding the vehicle and its involvement in the Spring Street shooting. The female said that the vehicle was parked at her work all day and never left. When presented with evidence the vehicle was not at her work all day she recanted her earlier statement. She said I forgot it was in fact not there all day. However, she stated emphatically that the vehicle never left her work after approximately 10:30 a.m. She stated the vehicle keys were in her possession throughout the day and there was not a second set of keys.
It was obvious to police Investigators she was attempting to mislead them. She was placed under arrest and charged with obstruction of justice/misleading police officers. Obstruction of Justice is a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years State Prison. Each was released on bail for a court appearance on Monday. The investigation is still ongoing and additional arrests are expected. At this time Police Investigators are not releasing the name of the female and/or her boyfriend.
