Tracking Sandy: Storm to have significant impact on Cape

CAPE COD - Sandy -- or the hybrid it is expected to be -- will have a significant impact on Cape Cod. Even if it weakens to a tropical storm for a time, all indications are it will reintensify as it become hybrid. The National Weather Service says: "There is moderate to high confidence that all of Southern New England will experience impacts from Sandy for the Sunday night into midweek time frame.
Strong to damaging winds /possibly hurricane force winds will result in widespread power outages. High seas and storm surges of at least 4 feet will result in severe beach erosion. Heavy rain with amounts of 4 to 8 inches over a 24 to 36 hour period /locally higher amounts/ will result in interior flooding." The NWS has posted preperation tips here.

NStar crews have been out trying to prune trees and extra crews are being brought into the area in advance of the storm. These utility crews were on I-95 in Georgia on Friday morning moving north.

Car plunges into Swan River

SOUTH DENNIS – Around 6:15 p.m. Saturday the male driver of a white Ford Explorer traveling east on Lower County Road lost control of his vehicle. The SUV narrowly missed the bridge abutment at the western end of the bridge and plunged into Swan River by the Swan River Fish Market.Ironically, the bridge is under reconstruction and a section of guardrail where thecar went through was missing, replaced by some yellow tape.
The driver was able to escape the vehicle, which became completely submerged. The outgoing tide carried the vehicle some distance from its probable entry point and it took firefighters and police officers a few moments to locate the fully submerged vehicle. The photo at top shows the spot where the vehicle left the road with a firefighter searching in the background.
Firefighters commented that if the vehicle were anything but white in color it would have been impossible to spot. Dennis divers will assist a towing company in removing the vehicle.
The condition of the driver is not known. He was treated inside a Dennis ambulance at the scene (photo at right).
