East Dennis arrested for B&E, 7 rifles seized

DENNIS
- A two day investigation into the Breaking and Entering of an unoccupied building on Paddocks Path in East Dennis has led to the arrest of Robert Foley, 34, of East Dennis.  Mr. Foley is being charged with 2 counts of Breaking and Entering and 2 counts of Larceny of Property Over $250.
 
The investigation began on Sunday afternoon when police were called by the owner of the building reporting that someone had broken into it and several items were now missing.
 
A description of a vehicle seen in the area of the break was obtained and Ptlmn. Sean Martin was able to track down a similar vehicle registered to Mr. Foley’s residence which is located within a mile of the break.
 
A search warrant was obtained for Mr. Foley’s residence and following execution of the warrant the items taken in this break, and a previous break to the same building which had occurred in September, were recovered. 
 
Officers also seized several other items during the search.  These items which are believed to be stolen and/or illegally possessed, include construction and mechanic tools, outboard motors, seven rifles and ammunition. 
 
The total of property recovered or seized is in excess of $10,000.
 
The investigation is continuing and additional charges may follow.

Afternoon news briefs
Dryer fire quelled in Brewster

BREWSTER
- A basement fire in Brewster was determined to be caused by a clothes dryer.

The call at 79 Great Oak Road came in around 3 p.m. and brought a response from Dennis and Harwich FDs as well.

Crews were able to remove the dryer and determine there was no extension to the structure.

No injuries were reported.

Man struck by vehicle at Bourne landfill
BOURNE - A man was injured after being struck by a vehicle at the Bourne landfill. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Bourne Police are investigating.

Dennis crash victim identified

DENNIS - Officials have identified the victim of Saturday's fatal crash in West Dennis as 51-year-old Jeffrey Kaplan of South Dennis. According to a preliminary investigation by Dennis Police, Kaplan, operating a Lincoln Navigator, had been travelling westbound on Route 28 and had left the roadway on two occasions prior to crossing into the east bound lane and striking a Ford Fusion operating by Margaret Snyder head-on. Snyder 57, and her husband Paul Snyder, 60, both of Athens, NY were treated and released at the scene. The force if the collision caused the Snyder vehicle to turn around 360 degrees prior to coming to rest on the sidewalk.  The navigator continued for a short distance striking and damaging a ten foot cement pillar, which marks the east entry of the old Columns restaurant driveway. The crash remains under investigation.


Knife wielding man tased in Sandwich
SANDWICH
- Sandwich Police report that Sunday evening, they responded to 39 Arnold Road in Sandwich initially for a well-being check of a female at the residence.  An immediate follow up call reported a male holding a knife to a women’s throat.  Upon arrival, Ofc. Lauren Gilrein heard a women yelling from within the house and running down the stairs.  The woman told Ofc. Gilrein that a male, later identified as John Scaramuzzo, 35, of Forestdale, had put a knife to her throat.

Scaramuzzo came down the stairs immediately after the female and appeared to be extremely angry and enraged.  When he was ordered by Ofc. Gilrein to stop and show his hands, Scaramuzzo refused to comply.  Ofc. Gilrein attempted to gain control of Scaramuzzo, but he pulled away, pushed the officer and stated, “You better call for back-up.”  He then started walking quickly towards the kitchen. 
 
Ofc. Gilrein immediately deployed her Taser on Scaramuzzo.  He went to the ground and was taken into custody.   Scaramuzzo was transported to the Sandwich Police Department where he was processed for this incident on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest as well as four outstanding warrants which were on file for him.  No injuries were reported.

Editor's note: According to CWN archives, John Scaramuzzo was seriously injured when he crashed his Porsche on East Falmouth Highway in Falmouth on June 19th of this year. In addition, Falmouth Police arrested him on July 13th, 2011 for operating under the influence of liquor, operating negligently to endanger, failing to stop or yield, and speeding,

Pickup vs pickup in Sandwich

SANDWICH
- About 9 a.m., this Toyota Tundra collided with a Ford pickup on Cotuit Road at Route 130 in Sandwich. Both drivers  were treated and released at the scene. It appeared the Toyota was turning onto Cotuit Road when it rear-ended the Ford. Sandwich Police are investigating.

Yarmouth Police weekend roundup
YARMOUTH
- Over the past weekend, Yarmouth Police responded to 362 police service calls, including 87 motor vehicle stops, 1 domestic violence attack, and 6 motor vehicle crashes. There were no OUI arrests, no crashes with serious Injury and no serious assaults. There were 9 total arrests.

Yarmouth Police also remind citizens there is an important town meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Mattacheese Middle School
