FALMOUTH - Falmouth Police report that about 10:25 a.m. Friday morning, a federal law-enforcement agent entered the East Falmouth Elementary School to watch a play. He had identified himself to school officials in an effort to put them at ease in case someone saw his gun. School officials not wanting to take any chances, called Falmouth Police about his presence. Falmouth Police were familiar with the agent but still responded to confirm his identity and ensure the safety of the school and community. The children and faculty of the school were never in danger, and the school was not placed in a lockdown. The identity of the agent is being withheld.
Meanwhile in another example of how tense things are in the wake of the CT massacre, a 15-year-old was arrested in Falmouth on Wednesday for carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds. A Falmouth Police spokesman tells CWN the suspect who can not be identifed because of his name was found with a pocked knife in his backpack.

Hundreds enjoy YFD open house

WEST YARMOUTH – Glorious October weather was the perfect backdrop for the Yarmouth Fire Department’s annual Fire Prevention Open House and Carnival.
Held Saturday on the last day of National Fire Prevention Week at Station 3 on Buck Island Road, the Open House hosted hundreds of visitors of all ages. Those in attendance watched demonstrations, played games and enjoyed hot dogs, popcorn and pizza on the house.
Yarmouth Fire Chief Michael Walker said the Open House is a key activity in the department’s fire prevention efforts. “It brings an awareness of fire prevention to our citizens and shows them how we work. It also gives them a chance to ask questions.”
Along with fun activities like a dunk tank and a bounce house, attendees saw the more serious side of things with a demonstration of how firefighters use hand tools and the hydraulic “Jaws of Life” to extricate victims from badly damaged cars.
Organized by Yarmouth Fire Captain Inspector Jon Sawyer and Lieutenant Inspector Jamie Armstrong, the event has become an annual event and a highlight of the year for both men. It is one of the few opportunities they have to meet with citizens in a fun-filled, no-stress environment between the hectic pace of summer and the onslaught of fire inspections mandated during November and December.
Sawyer praised the Yarmouth-Dennis Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for help in staging the event. “Year after year, it is the CERT members who make the day a success. They do everything from set-up to parking to pedestrian safety to popping popcorn to helping with cleanup. We could not do this event without them.”
Sawyer also thanked local businesses for their support: Papa Gino’s for free pizzas, True Value Hardware-Just Ask Rental for equipment donations, Ralph Perry for a cash donation to buy food and Doug Sherman of Top to Bottom Chimney for information on chimney safety.
On display with the aerial tower truck were the department’s forestry vehicle, an ambulance and Special Operations Dive Team truck. Appropriately enough, dive-team member Adam Riker team was the “victim” of multiple dunks in the dunk tank.
In addition to the department’s vehicles, a state hazmat truck and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Bureau of Forest Fire Control District Fire 1 brush breaker were on scene. The brush breaker brought along Smokey the Bear as a special guest.
Captain Sawyer reported that the day was a great success. He estimated that over 500 people attended the event. One measure of attendance was the number of kid-sized fire hats and helmets passed out. Smokey the Bear, assisted by Massachusetts State District 1 Fire Warden Josh Nigro, dispensed some 200 Smokey hats in one hour while the YFD gave away 300 kid’s fire helmets in the course of the four-hour event.
In the photo at top, Yarmouth firefighter and CERT member Gaynor Foster demonstrates the finer points of hose handling to Blake Silvestri while his brother, Cole, looks on.
