Sheriff's criminal justice academy coming soon
BOURNE - The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office has set the schedule for this fall’s Criminal Justice Academy, beginning Monday evening, November 5th, at Cape Cod Community College.  High school students who live on the Cape and may be interested in a criminal justice career can sign up by logging onto www.bsheriff.net/youthprogramPre-registration is required.

“This is ideal for college-bound students who’d benefit from an up-close look at law enforcement and criminal justice,” says Sheriff James M. Cummings.  “It’s not so much theory as it is day-to-day operations.  Some will like what they see and view it as a possible career path.  Others won’t.  Either way, it’s good to know.”

Academy members will learn about the Sheriff’s crime-solving lab, his K9 unit, and what inmate life is like inside the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne.  Participating students will also learn how Sheriff’s deputies use electronic monitoring, how tactical response teams handle difficult inmate situations, and how criminal cases are prosecuted and tried.

Students will meet for six Monday nights, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. The first class will be November 5th and the last class (graduation) will be December 17th.  No class on Veterans’ Day, November 12th.  For more about the Academy, check the website or call Shaun Cahill at (508) 375-6121.  Space is limited to 25.  Past classes have filled quickly.
