Sheriff announces signup and schedule for 2012 CERT classes
BOURNE - Barnstable County Sheriff James M. Cummings has set early October through early December for this year’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes.
CERT follows a national model established 17 years ago by the Los Angeles Fire Department and re-energized by the terrorist strike on 9/11. CERT responders do not replace but rather supplement professional emergency workers.
Members also assist police and preparedness planners at big venue non-emergencies -- road races, festivals, and the like. “Volunteerism in the service of good causes,” as Sheriff Cummings aptly puts it. This past weekend, for example, CERT members assisted Bourne Police and Barnstable County deputies manage the huge crowd that descends annually on the Bourne Scallop Fest.
Getting this latest contingent certified, meanwhile, will begin with the first class – Tuesday evening, Oct. 2nd, at 6:30 p.m. The two-hour classes will be held at the Sheriff’s youth ranch, located at 1445 Osterville-West Barnstable Road in West Barnstable. There will be no classes on October 9th and November 20th; the last of the eight sessions will be graduation night, December 4th.
CERT volunteers are a vital component to the Cape’s preparedness community, most especially in circumstances where the professional response has been temporarily overwhelmed. “Suffice to say, we need them a lot more than they need us,” concluded Sheriff Cummings. “My hat is off to the 300 certified members already on board, but we can always use more.”
Those interested should contact class instructor Chrystal LaPine at clapine@bsheriff.net. Or go directly to the Sheriff’s website www.bsheriff.net. (Simply hit the green “CERT” icon located near the bottom/middle of the home page.) Those without computer access can call Ms. LaPine at 508-375-6017.
