Pharmacist saves cardiac patient
YARMOUTH - This morning, at approximately 9:30 AM, the fire rescue department received a 911 call for a person in cardiac arrest at the CVS Pharmacy at Higgins Crowell Road and Route 28, West Yarmouth. Personnel at the store performed perfectly, answering questions from our emergency medical dispatcher, and providing updates and other information. In particular, Pharmacist Brian Callahan immediately began performing CPR, and continued CPR until the fire department paramedic arrived to administer advanced life support. The actions of Mr. Callahan were instrumental in the successful resuscitation of the approximately 60 year old male. Paramedics administered advanced cardiac therapy and airway management en route to Cape Cod Community Hospital, and upon arrival there, the patient was breathing on his own and had a pulse. No other information on the patient is available at this time.
The fire department encourages learning Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, CPR. American Heart Association studies say, “Failure to act in a cardiac emergency can lead to unnecessary deaths. Effective bystander CPR provided immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival, but only 32 percent of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander.”
