Wounded Warriors embark on bike ride

SOUTH DENNIS
– Thursday morning dawned clear, bright and beautiful, a perfect setting for the  approximately 30 badly wounded young American service men and women who took part in “Soldier Ride,” a rehabilitative bicycle trip on Cape Cod sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project.

These wounded warriors from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan set out from the Dennis end of the Cape Cod Rail Trail for a ride to Wellfleet on specially adapted upright, recumbent or hand-crank bicycles suited to their injuries. (The photo at right shows the group coming through Orleans),

The group was then escorted to Provincetown for lunch at the Lobster Pot Restaurant. Following lunch, they were led down MacMillan Wharf where they boarded the a Dolphin whalewatch.

The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors. Its purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured men and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. The goal of Soldier Ride is to help wounded war veterans gain confidence as they make the transition from rehabilitation back to civilian life. The ride has been held in cities across America since 2004, but this is its first visit to Cape Cod.

Immates redo roof on Mashpee equestrian building

MASHPEE
Barnstable County Sheriff’s inmates aren’t raising the roof, but they are re-surfacing it. That’s crew chief Lt. Joe Brait standing behind the broom man and overseeing two more inmate roofers. The new shingles sit atop what used to be an indoor riding arena in Mashpee, part of a complex of buildings owned and under the jurisdiction of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

The one-time equestrian venue is now used for storage of construction supplies and equipment, other heavy vehicles and the like. It measures out at 60 X 140 feet, so with roof overhang the actual job will surpass 8,500 square feet of shingling. Donated inmate labor will continue in phase two, with the new building getting siding and a paint job. This initial reroofing phase will save the Wampanoag Tribe about $20,000 in labor costs (estimated conservatively at $25 per hour).

Last year inmate labor saved Cape municipalities – along with innumerable non-profits – an estimated $530,000.  Crews were in Mashpee on 11 different projects, including tent donation and erection for charitable events. They were in all 15 Cape towns at least once, most more often than that. The program is on pace for another banner year. As one of the inmates pictured here said, when asked to sign a privacy waiver: “Sure I’ll sign.  It shows me doing something good for the community.
