State health commissioner steps down amid crime lab probe

September 18, 2012 (BOSTON) _ Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach has resigned.

His decision comes in the wake of an investigation of a chemist whose alleged mishandling of drug samples led police to shut down the state crime lab.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Judyann Bigby says Auerbach takes responsibility.

The lab was closed late last month after it was discovered the chemist had not followed testing protocols.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’keefe says his office has been notified about hundreds of cases that could be impacted by the lab problems.

Auerbach will be taking a job at Northeastern University’s Institute for Urban Health Research.
