It was detected from a mosquito trapped in Marstons Mills.
Barnstable town officials are encouraging residents to visit the state Department of Public Health web site for more information on taking precautions.
A mosquito with eastern equine encephalitis was collected in Brewster last month at Nickerson state park.
There have been no human cases of west nile this year.
