Wampanoag tribe cancels meeting with Mashpee officials regardning land issues

July 26, 2012 (MASHPEE) _ A meeting planned between Mashpee officials and leaders of the Wampanoag Tribe to talk about the tribe's deal with the state to build a casino has been canceled.

Selectmen Wayne Taylor says they were notified by a representative of the tribe this morning that they would not meet as planned on Friday.

It was unclear why the tribe canceled.

Town leaders have been hoping to pin down the tribe on a provision in its agreement with the governor that would have the state help settle tribal claims on land in and around Mashpee.

The state agreement conflicts with one the town reached with the tribe in 2008.

That deal gave the Qampanoag the deed to land in exchange for the tribe not seeking to build a casino in Mashpee.

The state senate is set to vote on the deal Thursday.
