Top story: One dies, one seriously injured in Dennis motorcycle crash

WEST DENNIS
– (updated) A horrific crash involving two motorcycles around 1:10 a.m. Sunday left one man dead and one man with serious injuries.

The crash occurred around 60 feet east of the intersection of School Street and Route 28 in front of Holiday Hot Tubs at 351 Main Street (Route 28). The motorcycles were apparently traveling east on Route 28 when the crash occurred. Police report both motorcycles struck a utility pole and both riders were thrown onto the roadway.

Dennis firefighters administered CPR to one of the victims. A Yarmouth Fire Department ambulance provided mutual aid and transported one victim -- Edward Kelley, 43, of Yarmouth --  to Barnstable Municipal Airport where he was transferred to a MedFlight helicopter. Dennis Fire transported the other victim -- a 35-year-old Hyannis man -- to Cape Cod Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The blood-spattered crash zone was littered with motorcycle parts and the personal effects of the victims. Reports at the scene indicate a third motorcycle was involved. Witnesses say the third motorcycle went down but the rider remounted and left the scene.
Police are looking to speak with the operator of the third motorcycle who is believed to have been traveling with the group.

Dennis Police and a Barnstable County Criminal Investigation Officer (CIO) were conducting an investigation of the crash. Route 28 was closed in both directions until the investigation was completed and the scene cleared. The crash remains under investigation and anyone with any information is asked to call the Dennis Police Department at 508-394-1314.

Large brush fire in Brewster

BREWSTER
 - Several fire departments were called to battle a stubborn brush fire near Higgins Pond in Nickerson State Park Sunday afternoon. Crews had difficulty accessing the scene and getting ample water to fight the fire which reportedly scorched about a 1/2 acre before being contained. Several towns along with personnel from the Cape Cod National Seashore and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation were on location. Fire crews had to rotate in and out of the scene as the heat and humidity took its toll on them. The Red Cross was on scene providing the crews with cold beverages.

T-bone at Trotting Park and Route 28 in Dennis

WEST DENNIS
– One of the most dangerous intersections in Dennis claimed two more vehicles around 3 p.m. Sunday. That’s when a Chevy Suburban with Texas license plates headed north on Trotting Park Road almost made it through the intersection before it was struck broadside by a westbound Ford Explorer on Route 28.

Remarkably, no one was injured in the crash although both vehicles suffered moderate damage. Route 28 was reduced to one lane until the scene could be cleared.

Dennis firefighters treated a fluid leak from the Explorer with absorbent material.
