July 11, 2012 (ORLEANS) _ The photo of a shark lingering near a kayaker off Nauset Beach this past weekend may not have been what it first appeared.

While it was reported to have been a great White – state shark experts now say it was likely a basking shark.

That variety only eats plankton.
 
Walter Szulc Jr. of New Hampshire was captured in the photo that raced across the Internet in recent days – even popping up on national network newscasts.

Shark expect Dr. Greg Skomal says the shape of the fin leads him to believe it was a basking shark – which poses far less danger to people.
