HYANNIS - In a press release, Barnstable Police have announced an arrest and released new details on Friday's shooting on Hiramar Road (click here for original story):
On Friday at 3:30 p.m., Barnstable Police Dispatch received several calls reporting “shots fired” in the area of 12 Hiramar Road, Hyannis. Responding Officers located a 28-yearold male shooting victim inside 12 Hiramar Road.  He sustained what appears to be a single gunshot wound to the leg.  The victim was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. Police Investigators met with the victim at Cape Cod Hospital. Initially he was uncooperative, however, he later provided investigators with a detailed physical description of the suspect. That description assisted police with the subsequent apprehension of the suspect. The victim could not provide a motive. Barnstable Patrol Units and Detective Units began an immediate follow up investigation.  It appears the victim was shot outside of 12 Hiramar Road, Hyannis and ran into the residence after being shot. His connection to that house is unknown at this time.

Police investigators located ballistic evidence to the rear of 12 Hiramar Road. Investigators were able to confirm multiple shots were fired. Also struck during the shooting was the natural gas meter for 10 Hiramar Road which resulted in a “serious gas leak.” Hyannis Fire Department and National Grid responded to assist police. At the time of the shooting 10 Hiramar Road was occupied by three children under the age of 13. Witnesses indicated the shooting suspect ran towards Quaker Road.  Barnstable Police K-9 Units were able to track the suspect to the Hinckley Road and Baxter Road area. Detective Jason Labor located Di’lon Smith, 20, of Hyannis (pictured) on Hinckley Road. He had just exited a residence in the area. Smith matched the description provided by the victim. He is very well known to Barnstable Police. In March of 2011, Smith was given a six-month sentence to the Barnstable House of Correction for illegal possession of cocaine. Further followup investigation and witness interviews resulted in the recovery of a loaded firearm inside the Hinckley Road residence Smith had just exited. The firearm had a defaced/altered serial number. The caliber of the handgun recovered and the caliber of the shell casing found at the shooting scene were the same.

Smith was placed under arrest and charged with Assault with intent to kill, A&B by means of a dangerous weapon/firearm, Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, Unlawful possession of a firearm, Possession of firearm with altered serial number during commission of felony, and Unlawful possession of ammunition.

Smith is currently being held at the Barnstable Police Station on a $25,000 cash bail. He will be arraigned on the above charges on Monday July 1st in Barnstable District court. The investigation is still ongoing. The motive for the shooting is not known at this time. The relationship between the victim and Smith is not known yet. It is also unclear if this shooting is related to the March 22, 2012 shooting at 20 Hiramar Road.
