May 31, 2012 (BOSTON) The federal government has further scaled down an area off Massachusetts where it hopes to attract offshore wind development.
The Bureau of Ocean Management announced new boundaries yesterday for the zone.
In includes an area of ocean about 14 miles south of Martha's Vineyard believed to be a prime area for wind energy.
The redrawn zone is now about 743,000 acres.
That's after regulators trimmed it by about 13 percent to eliminate areas that are important as sea duck habitat as well and for commercial and recreational fisheries.
The bureau had previously cut the proposed zone by more than half to address local concerns.
