Rental scam reported in Sandwich
SANDWICH - The Sandwich Police report that on Tuesday, a person living out of town notified them that they had responded to a Craigslist.org advertisement for a house rental within Sandwich that appeared to be questionable. Chief Peter Wack told WXTK that he contacted the owner of the property in question who lives off Cape. The owner told him he was not renting out the property.
The advertiser on Craigslist.org responded to the inquiry using a Yahoo.com e-mail address, which included the legal house owner’s full name within the e-mail address. The e-mail provided a paragraph justifying why the person renting out the house was not in the United States for an extended period of time. The e-mail listed all features of the house, a very reasonable monthly rental rate and reasonable security deposit.
The person interested in renting the house was asked to fill out a questionnaire with their personal information. The e-mail then stated that once a security deposit and the questionnaire were received, the house keys would be mailed out.
Sandwich Police Chief Peter Wack says, “The potential impact to the unsuspecting person in such a situation is that they would lose their security deposit and become a potential identity-theft victim. Also, e-mails opened from unknown sources have the potential to contain a virus.”
People interested in renting a house should consider working with a local rental agency or verify the authenticity of houses listed for rent.
