Man charged with 3rd offense OUI
HARWICH - On Wednesday at approximately 9 p.m., Harwich Police Patrol Officer Keith Kannally was conducting a directed patrol of the Bank Street Beach and the surrounding area due to numerous complaints that have been received from citizens.

Citizen complaints have ranged from drug use to noise complaints and the Harwich Police Department has been working with the citizens to create better options at dealing with the problems.

Patrol Officer Kannally encountered a suspicious vehicle parked on Braddock Lane.  As Officer Kannally approached, the vehicle began to back up.  The vehicle was ordered to stop and Officer Kannally approached to investigate.

The driver identified himself as Edward McGadden, 37, of Chatham.  Officer Kannally smelled an odor of alcohol on Mr. McGadden’s breath as he spoke.  Officer Kannally asked Mr. McGadden why he had stopped in the middle of the road and he replied that he had been drinking and that he did not want to be drinking and driving.

Mr. McGadden was administered a series of field sobriety tests that he did not pass and was subsequently placed under arrest.  He was transported to the Harwich Police Department where he was processed and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor (3rd Offense).

Mr. McGadden was later bailed and was scheduled to be arraigned in Orleans District Court on Thursday.

YPD warns citizens of email phishing scams
YARMOUTH
- The Yarmouth Police Department recently received a report of a ‘phishing scam’ that involved a false Comcast over due bill notice that was emailed to a Yarmouth Port resident seeking payment for an overdue bill.

The resident did the correct thing and called Comcast directly and quickly determined it was a hoax.

Emailed phishing scams happen constantly all over the world and are done in an attempt to gain personal and financial information and money.

The Yarmouth Police Department reminds everyone of the following recommendations issued by the Federal Deposit Insurance Company:

The term "phishing" – as in fishing for confidential information - refers to a scam that encompasses fraudulently obtaining and using an individual's personal or financial information. This is how it works:

  • A consumer receives an e-mail which appears to originate from a financial institution, government agency, or other well-known/reputable entity.
  • The message describes an urgent reason you must "verify" or "re-submit" personal or confidential information by clicking on a link embedded in the message.
  • The provided link appears to be the Web site of the financial institution, government agency or other well-known/reputable entity, but in "phishing" scams, the Web site belongs to the fraudster/scammer.
  • Once inside the fraudulent Web site, the consumer may be asked to provide Social Security numbers, account numbers, passwords or other information used to identify the consumer, such as the maiden name of the consumer's mother or the consumer's place of birth.
  • When the consumer provides the information, those perpetrating the fraud can begin to access consumer accounts or assume the person's identity.
If you suspect an e-mail or Web site is fraudulent, please report this information to the real bank, company or government agency, using a phone number or e-mail address from a reliable source.

If you suspect that you have been a victim of identity theft, perhaps because you submitted personal information in response to a suspicious, unsolicited e-mail or you see unauthorized charges on your credit card, immediately contact your financial institution and, if necessary, close existing accounts and open new ones.

Body of missing man found in Brewster

BREWSTER
-
At 9:30 a.m. Thursday the Brewster Police Department issued a media release announcing that the body of Edwin Covey III had been found on the Harwich side of Long Pond this morning. According to reports from the scene, the body was found in a half-submerged dinghy along the shoreline. Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Barnstable County District Attorney's office are handling the investigation. It does not appear foul play was involved. In the photo above, investigators on the Harwich Fire Department's boat examine the body found in the dinghy (partially obscured by vegetation).

Background: On Wednesday, the Brewster Police received a report from a local inn keeper that she was concerned about one of her patrons who had checked in the day prior, but had not been seen since. The patron was identified as 52-year-old Edwin Covey III.  After speaking with family members of Mr. Covey, officers determined that he was possibly endangered. A broadcast was put out to local departments to check on the well being of Mr. Covey if he was located.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. officers located Mr. Covey’s vehicle parked at Long Pond Landing. The Barnstable County Sheriffs Office was contacted and a K-9 unit responded to assist in the search. With assistance from the K-9 some personal items, identified as Mr. Covey’s, were located along the shoreline. Brewster Fire & Rescue responded to the area and launched watercraft to assist with the search.

Two injured in construction accident in Provincetown

Emergency crews at the scene of a construction accident in Provincetown. Damaged scaffolding can be seen above the cruiser.
PROVINCETOWN - Two people were injured in a fall at a construction site in Provincetown shortly before 8 a.m. Rescuers were called to the Province Landings housing development at 90 Shankpainter Road.

The two men apparently fell off a scaffold about two stories. They were placed in protective collars and on backboards and taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation. It appears the fact they landed in relatively soft muddy earth helped to avoid more serious injuries.

Provincetown Police were on scene and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will investigate.
