Illegal dumping caught on tape in Barnstable
Video available: Watch Sgt. Sean Sweeney's report

BARNSTABLE - Over the past several years the quality of life issue, illegal dumping of household trash as well as construction debris has been a main topic when speaking with members of our community. Mary Dunn Rd. in Barnstable Village is a long, wooded, scenic road that has several hiking trails and watershed properties that abut it. Unfortunately Mary Dunn Rd. has also become a target for people looking to dispose of trash, debris, and construction materials. The Barnstable Police Department, in conjunction with the Town of Barnstable Highway Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Work Crews, has done several cleanup projects on Marry Dunn Rd. over the past several years. The most Recent was January 26 of this year and not more than 3 weeks later the surveillance system in place captured a Marichal Landscaping truck and trailer disposing of construction materials by an old pump house, right across the street from a protected water supply.
Officer Bulman conducted an investigation that lead to charges being filed against 39 year old Darkys Marichal, of Hyannis. Along with facing criminal charges Marichal is responsible for cleaning the construction material that they disposed of on Mary Dunn Rd.
The Barnstable Police hope that this case leads as an example to anyone else who chooses to try and illegally dispose of household trash or construction debris in our community. We are working diligently to keep Barnstable clean and beautiful for future generations and anyone who violates these laws will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Fire heavily damages Hyannis condos

HYANNIS - A two-alarm fire caused extensive damage to a Hyannis condo complex. The call at the Iyannough Village Condos at 1029 Iyannough Road (Route 132) came in about 9 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames crawling up unit 4. All occupants were able to safely escape.
The second alarm brought in mutual aid from Barnstable, Centerville and Yarmouth. The 23 degree temperature and a biting 15 MPH northwesterly wind made for a frigid battle against the flames. No injuries were reported.
Several units are uninhabitable and the Red Cross was on scene to provide temporary shelter for the displaced residents. Investigators believe the fire may have started outside but the exact cause is still under investigation.
