Mid-winter training at National Fire Academy

EMMITSBURG, MD - Cape Wide News correspondent Kevin Morley attended a training course last week at the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) on the grounds of the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Many Cape Cod firefighters have attended courses at NFA and EMI and have fond memories of the experience.Nestled in the Catoctin Mountains and just 10 miles from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the NFA occupies the campus of the former St. Josephs College, a four-year liberal arts college for women. It was purchased by the Federal Government in 1979 to serve as a training facility.
In 1981, the facility was entered into the Federal records as the National Emergency Training Center (NETC). Today, the 107-acre campus houses the United States Fire Administration, including the NFA; the EMI; the Preparedness Section of the FEMA Acquisition Operations Branch; the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Fallen Firefighter's Memorial. The Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial (photo at top), was dedicated on October 4, 1981 to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. In October 1990 Congress designated it as the National Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial.
Also on campus is a massive 40-foot-high sculpture (photo at right, click to enlarge), entitled “To Lift a Nation” dedicated to the firefighters who lost their lives at Ground Zero on September 11th, 2001.
