NOAA Reports Endangered Whale Killed In Virginia

The North Atlantic right whale discovered off Virginia waters in the past week was killed by a vessel strike.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials announced the female, cataloged as Number 1950 suffered a complete dislocation of the spine from the collision.

The whale also left behind a calf, which has not been seen since and is unlikely to survive without its mother.

This is the endangered species' fourth death in 2024, and third to die in such a manner.

Calls have been renewed to modify NOAA's vessel speed regulations, as collisions account for many of the whale's deaths and injuries.

There are less than 360 right whales known alive, with fewer than 70 females capable of reproduction.
