Experts Suggest Checking Pets, Kids For Ticks, Mosquito Bites

With warmer weather and a mild winter, officials are calling on Bay State residents to check themselves and their pets for ticks.

Brian Hickey of New England Organic Tick & Mosquito Treatment says ticks are active year-round, but freezing weather slows them down, and most species will use leaves and snow to protect themselves.

Experts say ticks should be checked for after hiking, gardening, or walking in grassy areas. Skin should be covered, and the use of EPA-approved insect repellents is encouraged.
