Commissioners Want Money For Machine Gun Range To Dry Up

Barnstable County Commissioners have written to Massachusetts' Congressional delegation, regarding a proposed machine gun practice range on Joint Base Cape Cod.

The commissioners are calling on Congressman William Keating and Senators Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren to oppose any additional funding for the project.

The Mass. Army National Guard is seeking the range, but two bids are nearly six-million dollars higher than the eight-point-nine million dollar estimated cost.

According to the US Department of Environmental Protection, the range is opposed because it could contaminate Cape Cod's lone source aquifer.

Military officials say the Guard needs the range, in order to qualify with updated US Army qualification standards, and no other base in the state prioritizes Guard training.
