Officials: Joint Base Cape Cod Underused In Crisis

Cape officials say Joint Base Cape Cod is being under-used to help shelter migrant families.

Yarmouth and Barnstable County officials say only a few hundred migrants have been sheltered at the base, in comparison to Hurricane Katrina, where the base was prepared to take in 25-hundred.

Bourne and Eastham is offering emergency sheltering as well, but Mark Forest, who chairs the Count Commission says Yarmouth and other communities are calling for better communication with state and federal government.

Governor Maura Healey has set a cap of 75-hundred families seeking housing, with a wait list to follow once that figure is reached.

Meantime, the Governor has also revealed that she is considering cutting the time a family can spend in an emergency shelter to try to take care of as many people as possible.
