Concerns About Cape Fishing Industry Expressed

Fishermen along the Cape have expressed concern about commercial operations which they say are the main cause of the disappearance of the Atlantic Sea Herring.

One of the most abundant species in the world, the population of the fish, however, has fallen sharply on the cape.

The Cape Cod Fisherman's Alliance is putting the blame on midwater trawlers, which they say are fishing the waters dry.

At a meeting earlier this fall, the New England Fishery Management Council voted to begin work on legislation that would force the trawlers to work no less than 20 miles offshore.
