Right Whale Carcass Found on Nashawena Island

The International Fund for Animal Welfare says the carcass of a North Atlantic right whale has been found on the coast of Nashawena Island. IFAW posted the information on its Facebook page on Monday, noting that the whale is very decomposed.

It is the 16 North Atlantic right whale known to have died this year – 12 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and now four off the U.S. coast – or about 3 percent of the total population.

NOAA Fisheries estimates that there are only 458 North Atlantic right whales in the world.
