Fire Destroys 2 Sailboats on Martha's Vineyard

Burning Sailboat

Two sailboats were destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon on Martha’s Vineyard.

The call came in around one o’clock for a fire on two fiberglass sailboats moored together on the Oak Bluffs side of Lagoon Pond.

Several Island Police and Fire units responded, including the Oak Bluffs Police and Fire boat, the Oak Bluffs Harbormaster, Tisbury Police and Fire Departments, and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Marine unit.

Firefighters took cans of environmentally-friendly firefighting foam to the scene to battle the blaze while Tisbury firefighters deployed a pollution prevention boom around the burning boats to lessen the chance of any pollution.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
