September 3, 2014 (BUZZARDS BAY) _ The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission took public comment last night in Buzzards Bay on the future of the Atlantic Striped bass fishery.
Officials have been working on new policies to combat a decline in bass numbers. there’s been a 19% drop in striped bass landings since 2008.
The Division of Marine Fisheries says the problem is not related to over-fishing, but a result of fewer spawning females.
Potential changes include a 25% cut for commercial and recreational fishermen or a phased cut over several years.
The recreational limit could also be cut from two to one fish per day. A final decision is expected in October.
