Most Frequently Asked Questions
regarding chronic or non-healing wounds.

What is a non-healing wound?

A non-healing wound is any wound that has failed to make significant progress in four weeks or completely heal in eight weeks. If you have a wound that just wont seem to go away you should contact your Primary Care Physician or a wound care specialist. An important exception is if you have a diagnosis of diabetes or neuropathy, you should seek treatment as soon as you notice a wound or break in your skin. A rash is not considered a non-healing wound and should be evaluated by your primary care physician.

Are some people more prone to non-healing wounds than others?

Yes, as we age our ability to heal may decrease. People with Diabetes, poor circulation in the legs, those who spend increased time sitting in a wheel chair or in bed are at higher risk for skin breakdown.

What is different about a Wound Care Center as opposed to other providers?

The Wound Care Center has a comprehensive team of doctors and nurses who specialize in treating wounds. The center follows proven clinical pathways to assist the body to heal itself. This team includes physicians in many specialties including internal medicine, surgery, podiatry, and physical medicine so you have the benefit of being matched up with the best possible physician for your needs.

Will insurance cover a visit to a wound care specialist?

You do not need a referral to seek the help of a wound care specialist unless required by your insurance, typically a HMO plan. We highly recommend you speak to your Primary Care Physician to let him or her know you have a wound and would like to come to the wound center. Regular updates will be sent to your physician during your treatment at the center. We treat the wound only, and you will need to continue regular follow up with your physician.
