July 30, 2012 (MASHPEE) _ Gov. Deval Patrick is again calling on lawmakers to support an amendment to a crime bill that would give more discretion to judges in the sentencing of repeat offenders.
Patrick says he wants a bill to sign before the legislative session ends at midnight on Tuesday.
The measure previously approved by lawmakers includes a so-called "three strikes" provision that would bar parole for felons convicted of a third violent crime.
The bill has been championed by Les Gosule. His daughter Melissa was murdered in 1999 by Michael Gentile of Falmouth.
Gentile offered Gosule a ride after her car broke down near the Cape Cod Canal -- then raped and killed her.
Patrick wants an amendment that would give judges limited discretion to grant parole to three-time felons.
