Lightning sparks house fire in Brewster, smoke in West Barnstable

BREWSTER
- Firefighters from Harwich and Orleans assisted Brewster at a house fire at 141 Timberlane Drive Wednesday afternoon.

It appeared a lightning strike blew the electrical meter right off the side of the house. 
 

Fire damage to the basement was extensive. The fire worked its way up to the first floor walls and was quickly brought under control
.

No injuries were reported.

A short time later, West Barnstable firefighters were called to 16 Morgan Way for a lightning strike with smoke reported in the basement.

By late afternoon the heavy storms had finally moved out to sea after causing street flooding in several areas.

One injured in Harwich crash
HARWICH
- Heavy downpours in the area may have caused this head-on collision on Route 137 around 4 p.m. Wednesday. The crash happened in front of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Harwich Fire and Rescue transported one person to Cape Cod Hospital with unknown injuries. Harwich Police are handling the investigation.

One injured in Falmouth rear-ender

FALMOUTH
- A two vehicle crash on East Falmouth Highway (RT28) at Ox Bow Rd sent one person to Falmouth hospital with minor injuries. A Toyota Prius was struck from behind by a Nissan Maxima. The impact forced the Toyota off the road into brush and trees, narrowly missing a large tree. One person from the Nissan was treated and transported to Falmouth Hospital while two occupants of the Toyota did not require medical assistance. Falmouth PD were on scene investigating the crash.

Man busted for heroin 
SANDWICH
- The Sandwich Police conducted an investigation into narcotics activity involving Ryan Davenport, 27, of in Sandwich. Subsequent to that investigation, the Sandwich Police made a traffic stop on Davenport on Wednesday. He was found with five packages of heroin totaling approximately 1.5 grams. Davenport was arrested and charged with Possession of a Class A Substance (Heroin) with Intent to Distribute and motor vehicle violations.

Pole fire closes Route 28, knocks out power in Mashpee
MASHPEE
- A fire on a utility pole caused some major headaches Tuesday evening. The trouble started on the pole in front of Mashpee Care and Rehab sometime around 8:30 p.m. Route 28 between Route 130 and Route 151 had to be closed due to concerns of live wires coming down in the street until NStar crews could arrive onscene. Power was knocked out to a large section of Mashpee but crews were able to isolate the trouble and restore most power in less than an hour. Equipment failure is apparently to blame for the trouble,

Vessel sinks in Provincetown harbor


PROVINCETOWN
- An approximately 20-foot center console vessel began taking on water and partially sank in Provincetown Harbor east of MacMillan Wharf Tuesday evening. The Provincetown Harbormaster's Office was on scene and the Coast Guard was notifed. There was no fuel leakage. Crews were able to pump enough water from the vessel at low tide to right it and pull it ashore, The cause of the sinking was not immediately known.

- Over the Labor Day Weekend, Yarmouth Police responded to 554 Police Service Calls, including 132 Motor Vehicle Stops, 9 Motor Vehicle Crashes, 10 Domestic Violence Attacks, 0 OUI Arrests and 15 Total Arrests

Significant Arrests

Quentin G. Antoine, 26, of South Yarmouth was arrested for Domestic Assault and Battery and Felony Intimidation of a Government Witness on Friday at 10:30 p.m., after an alleged domestic violence attack at his residence.




Arthur R. Garabrant Jr., 64, of South Yarmouth was arrested for Felony Assault and Battery on a Person over age 60, Two Counts of Felony Assault and Battery while Armed with a Dangerous Weapon on a Person over age 60, and Felony Assault and Battery on a Person over age 60 Causing Injury on Saturday at 2:45 p.m., after allegedly accosting an elderly woman on a beach in South Yarmouth.


Lindsey J. Viera, 22, of South Yarmouth (left) and Lorretta A. McCarthy, 20, of South Yarmouth (right) were arrested for Felony Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime on Sunday at 11:38 p.m., after an alert citizen called police reporting a break-in in progress to an abandoned home in South Yarmouth.





Hayden W. Knott, 24, of South Yarmouth was arrested for Three Counts of Felony Assault and Battery while Armed with a Dangerous Weapon and Disorderly Conduct on Sunday at 8:30 p.m., during an alleged altercation in a parking lot on Route 28 in South Yarmouth.


All suspects were scheduled for arraignment Tuesday in the Barnstable District Court.

HYANNIS
- Over the Labor Day Weekend, Barnstable Police responded to 622 Total Calls for Service, made 16 Arrests including 2 for OUI liquor, responded to 23 Alarms, 123 Motor Vehicle Stops, and 18 Motor Vehicle Accidents. A total of 67 traffic citations were issued.

5th Annual Mighty Meehan 5K Sunday in West Dennis

WEST DENNIS – The Turlough Meehan Foundation announces the 5th Annual Mighty Meehan 5K (MM5K) Run/Walk for infant leukemia research.

Start time is 10 a.m. on this Sunday, September 9, at West Dennis Beach. You can register on race day starting at 8 a.m. or register online at www.mightymeehan.com.

You can also register in person or pick up your number at Dennis Fire Department headquarters on Route 28 in West Dennis from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 8.  In addition, you can register at the “VivaPalozza” Healthy Living Expo at Barnstable High School on September 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The race is followed by a party and awards ceremony at Chapin's Fish & Chips on Lower County Road in Dennisport. In addition to the food, music, and good times, the Turlough Meehan Foundation hosts a silent auction and raffle in support of infant leukemia research.
